So I was talking to one of my friends the other day and we were talking about past relationships. The question was posed to me… how is your ex doing? My immediate reaction was that I did not know. I have not talked to him in over two years. For whatever reason, my friend had the reaction of shock. She stated that my ex and I were together for 9 years, he was your first boyfriend, but more important this man was your best friend.
I remember when I ended things, he still wanted to keep in touch with me. He would call me and want to hang out. My reaction to that, “heck no I am not hanging out with you. We are no longer a couple, so why would I still talk to you?”
Last year I starting dating a friend that I’ve known for 11 years. Well after dating him for a few months, I realized we were not compatible. We were better as friends. However I decided that because we started dating, I did not want to go back to being friends. As with my ex of 9 years, I believe that once you were in a relationship with that person, you could never go back to being friends.
Now after having the conversation with my friend, I’m wondering if it is really such a bad thing to be friends with an ex. What if the two of you were the best of friends before the relationship began? Can you really ever go back to being just friends, especially when the relationship didn’t end on bad terms? I don’t know… just a little food for thought…
