April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day! What do you know about Autism? Do you know someone who suffers from Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder ranges from mild to severe difficulties with their social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. This disorder is more common in males. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. Signs and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between the ages of 2 and 3 years old.
As some of you may know, my youngest brother was diagnosed with a mild form of Autism around the age of 2. I am not saying this because I am speaking of my brother, but he is so smart, especially when it comes to computer technology. As a matter of fact, many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music and academic skills. “About 40 percent have average to above average intellectual abilities.”
You would never know that my brother suffers from autism until you hold a conversation with him. Sometimes it is hard for him to express verbally what he is trying to say to you and it frustrates him. When he gets frustrated, he tends to shut down and not want to talk. Honestly, I cannot blame anyone for feeling that way. However you cannot let them shutdown and crawl back into their shell. The key is to keep them engaged.
My youngest brother is the strongest, smartest and friendliest person I know. I thank GOD that I have him as my brother. There isn’t one thing I would not do for him.
